What
is the Fire Department’s ISO Rating?
The
fire department is currently split-rated by ISO.
- ISO 3-applies
to properties inside Beavercreek within 1000 feet of a fire
hydrant and five road miles of a fire station.
- ISO
9-applies to properties inside Beavercreek further than
1000 feet to a fire hydrant, but less than five miles commercial/six
miles residential of a fire station.
Previously,
the fire department had been rated 6/9. The increase from an
ISO 6 to ISO 3 had the potential to directly affect businesses
through a reduction in their fire insurance premiums (based
upon their insurer’s use of the ISO system to determine
premiums).

How
many employees does the Fire Department have?
As of January 2005, the Fire Department has 124 members. These members serve
the organization in several different capacities, as career employees, part
time
employees,
and as volunteers. Based upon the different types of involvement, a total count
of employees is not simple.
Fire
Department employees serve in three basic areas: staff, line
and volunteer. Staff employees are the administrative component
of the department. They provide the basic logistical infrastructure
for the organization to run. These employees work in a standard
office environment and handle daily issues like payroll, accounts
receivable and payable, human resources, data entry, fire prevention
and fire and ems training.
Line
employees are the operational component of the organization.
They provide the direct to customer emergency responses. These
employees are cross-trained as firefighters, emergency medical
technicians, apparatus driver/operators, hazardous material
responders and more. These crews operate from fire stations
24-hours per day, 7-days per week.
Volunteers
are involved in two critical areas of the organization. The
Auxiliary is a fire department support operation that provides
two critical response services. First, they support emergency
crews working on scenes by providing food, water, heating or
cooling as necessary, and other basic needs. Second, they provide
critical support to victims of fire. They provide advice, advocacy,
and anything else needed by someone who has recently experienced
a loss due to fire. Explorers are high-school aged volunteers
who have an interest in the fire service as a career. These
students learn basic fire department operations and help with
many non-emergency fire department events and functions.
Employees
in any of the above functions, may be classified as full time,
part time, or volunteer. Full time employees are sworn firefighters,
who have been hired in a career capacity by the Township. Part
time employees may serve at one of two levels; regular part
time work a standard 24-48 schedule, while part time employees
work a flexible schedule. Volunteers work as needed and available
for different projects and incidents. They receive no compensation
for their time-they work for their own personal reasons.

hours do Firefighters work?

shifts. Staff employees work a regular, 40-hour business week. They have weekends
and holidays off. Line employees work a regular an average 53-hour work week.
They work one 24-hour shift, followed by two 24-hour days off. This is a traditional
24-48 shift. Their duty days are set, regardless of weekends or holidays. Currently,
all four fire stations in Beavercreek are staffed with 24-48 crews.
For
24-48 crews, the basic work day runs from 7:00 a.m. when they
report to duty through 6:00 p.m. During this time they perform
